More Sickness and the Dentist

On Sunday, we went to lunch with some friends after church and as we were sitting there, Luke wanted some juice from his juice box. He drank and drank and then he threw up everywhere. It was so weird because although he had eaten other things, it was just liquid and he wasn’t coughing so I just thought maybe he drank too fast or something. And we hadn’t even gotten our food yet, so we decided to stay and eat. At least we were sitting outside!
Luke didn’t eat much at lunch but we came home and he took a decent nap. But he didn’t seem to be feeling good, so we decided I should stay home from church with him that night and Chris would take Caroline since we had nursery duty. It was a good thing because not long after they left for church, Luke threw up again. Then I knew it was a stomach bug!
He did better that night and seemed fine the next day. But then I got it! The kids had a dentist appointment that morning, so I decided to go ahead and take them since Luke had eaten breakfast and seemed better. Caroline had been several times before, but always was a little clingy and scared and wouldn’t lay down while they cleaned her teeth. She was also scared of the dentist, but we had talked a lot about since the last time she went and I think she knew more what to expect. She did great! They didn’t make her lay down, but she wasn’t afraid to climb up in the chair and let them do her cleaning, etc.
But the dentist did notice something "special" about Caroline! I had noticed some spots on her tongue and they seemed to move around. I just figured they were from her biting it or something, but I had asked the pediatrician about it and she said it was unusual but didn't know what it was. The dentist said it was a condition called "geographic tongue". It's an inflammatory condition that only affects about 3% of the population, but there's not really any treatment for it. It runs in families and they don't really know what causes it, but they do think food may affect it. I think it's worse when she eats spicy food, but it doesn't seem to bother her!

Luke, on the other hand, didn’t do as well. It was his first time and I expected the worst, and he kicked and screamed and didn’t want to open his mouth. But it wasn’t TOO bad. The dentist was able to look at his teeth a little, so that was good. I was just glad when it was all over! And I started feeling a little woozy, but I figured I was just tired. After the dentist, we went to the library to pick up some movies for the kids since it was a rainy day with no school. I started feeling worse, so we just got our videos and went home. Then I started feeling really bad and got sick around lunch time. It was so hard being by myself and needing to feed the kids lunch but feeling SO sick! I was so dizzy and it was hard to stand up or walk around, but I managed to fix them lunch and get them to bed so I could go to bed! Fortunately, they both took good naps so I could take a nap and Chris got home early as they were waking up so he could help me. By that afternoon, I was much better and even ate a little dinner that night. I’m glad it was short-lived for both of us and no one else got sick!
