And then there’s this guy: so silly!
Speaking of Luke, we've been struggling with him a bit this summer. I’ve mentioned some of his eating issues - very picky but more than that, resists trying new things. I just kept thinking it would get better as he got older and we could reason with him more, but it hasn't. So I talked to his doctor and she recommended getting an evaluation with a pediatric occupational therapist. We did that and they thought he could benefit from their feeding therapy program so we started that once a week. They also thought he might have some sensory issues, so I filled out a sensory profile on him. It revealed that he does have some sensory sensitivities that are causing his anxiety. So they're now doing therapeutic brushing and some other sensory exercises to help him relax and then be more cooperative during the feeding part. He's already doing better and a little more willing to try some things, but still has a long way to go!
And if that wasn't enough, he's had this dry cough on & off since March or April. We've tried allergy medicine, nasal sprays, and even antibiotics and they would help a little but some nights he would cough for an hour or 2! So we finally took him to his allergist to see if it was asthma or just allergies and she did a skin test and discovered that was it! He is very allergic to dust, grass and tree pollens and dogs - like his mama! But thankfully doesn't have my allergies to weeds and molds so that's good! But that would explain why he's had it bad since the spring and we're hoping he'll get some relief when fall comes. The allergist prescribed some Singulair pills for him to take and said they're really effective for allergy coughs - and they were! He stopped coughing! BUT, there were some bad side effects - his behavior was SO bad, he would be wild one minute and mean the next! Everything was a fight, plus he was not sleeping well! So we stopped his meds after a week of that and his behavior has been much better but the cough is back - pick your poison, huh?! But he should be getting some relief in the next month or so when everything stops blooming and we're hoping we can make it manageable with the other allergy meds until then. Please pray!!
Toward the end of July, Chris and I were able to go on a little getaway thanks to his parents! We dropped the kids off at Camp Gigi and ended up shopping & eating dinner in Birmingham that night. We got a good deal on a hotel and spent the night there. The next morning we slept in a little and ate a late breakfast before seeing the Planet of the Apes movie in 3D! It was pretty good – much better than I had expected, ha!
After the movie we headed on up to Gorham’s Bluff, just up the river from Scottsboro, AL. It was a beautiful day so we just walked around and explored the grounds and enjoyed the views!
Then we read and relaxed until it was time for dinner. A wonderful 3-or 4-course dinner was served! The sun was setting afterwards so we walked around a bit more until the bugs got annoying, then read for a while before bed.
The next morning we really slept in! We got up and ate a yummy breakfast of fresh fruit, muffins, biscuits, and oatmeal. Chris had all that minus the oatmeal and he had pancakes and ham. We were stuffed from all that so we headed out to ride bikes to see some more of the little town. We ended up finding a tandem bike that we could ride together – it was so fun!
Then we went back to our room and read some more until the box lunches were ready. We weren’t hungry at all and were hoping the lunch would be more of a snack. But it wasn’t! It was fried chicken, potato salad, fruit salad, beans, and more! I’m glad we shared one but it was still too much! But we explored and read some more that afternoon. We weren’t even hungry for dinner! But it was even better than the night before! We walked and read some more after dinner.
The next morning we packed up our things and went on one more bike ride before heading out. We had one more night before we were to get the kids – we had thought about going home to get some things done without them, but decided to do something fun & spontaneous instead! We bought tickets for a show in Chattanooga and got a room at a B&B there. When we left Gorham’s bluff around lunch time (we weren’t even hungry), we drove to Chattanooga and walked around Coolidge Park before it was time to see Les Miserables in the local theatre. It was great!
We walked around downtown afterwards and ate at our favorite restaurant, Big River Grill. Then we walked around some more before retiring early to our B&B. We were pretty tired so we went on to bed. The next morning we headed out after breakfast to see the Raccoon Caverns. It was so cool (literally!) and we enjoyed another little adventure sans kids.
After that, we went on back to Birmingham and ate a light lunch at Panera before going to Gigi’s to get our kiddos! They had had a great time, too, but were glad to see us! We were so glad to have some time away to relax after a busy summer – thank you Gigi and PopPop!!
This month marks the first anniversary of our move to our current house! I’ll try to post before and after pics next.
