No Milk for You!

Well, a lot has happened since my last post and I’m not sure where to start! Friday night, Dec. 16th, I decided to give Luke yogurt for the first time. I didn’t really think about the timing except that his doctor had given me the go-ahead at his appointment this week and Caroline did fine with it. Well, about half-way through his cheeks started turning red. I thought it was odd, but he gets splotchy from time to time and he’s so fair that every little mark shows up, so I didn’t think too much of it. After a few more bites he was just looking more red around his mouth so I stopped and had Chris do some research online to see if it could be a reaction. We took a picture in case we had to show the doctor:

Luke-allergy

Luke seemed fine and was happy all the time I was feeding him, so I put him down to help Chris. A few minutes later, Luke’s nose started running a lot and he was having trouble breathing, but he had had a little cold, so I just took him to his room to suction out his nose. Chris came back a little later to check and his cheeks were still red and he was still having trouble breathing through his nose. We decided to call the doctor, but of course it was Friday after business hours so we left a message for the on-call doctor. She finally called back and said it was no big deal as long as his face and tongue weren’t swollen and he could still breathe! She said I could give him 1/4 tsp. of Benadryl if I had it, but not to worry. But I was worried!! So I gave him some Benadryl and then noticed he had a bad diaper. A few minutes after I got him all cleaned up he threw up a bunch (and not just spit up!), so then I knew his body was trying to get rid of whatever it was allergic to! Then he had diarrhea all the next day! From our online research, we figured it was a milk allergy, which might explain why he gets all splotchy when he nurses (because I eat a lot of dairy), and has had persistent rashes on his face and bottom. So I decided to avoid dairy to see if his rashes would improve and they have! Since it was the weekend and we couldn’t take him to the doctor right away, and then we were going out of town for Christmas, we decided to see how he did and wait until after we got back.

Meanwhile, that night during all the craziness, Caroline decided she needed to go to the bathroom, so Chris helped her. Then a few minutes later she was pulling out all the tissues from the box and then had an accident in her panties!! Never a dull moment around our house!!
