Brokedown with the Motherhood!

I’ve been SO tired lately because Luke’s been waking up at night for the last couple of weeks. I figured it was teething at first, but then I didn’t think he was getting enough to eat because he wasn’t nursing well during the day. After 2 weeks of nightly feedings, I decided to give him all bottles during the day to see exactly how much he was getting. When I knew he had plenty to eat, I had to just let him cry it out! He was pretty mad and I had to rock him a little to calm him down, but after 30 minutes of screaming, he realized he didn’t need to/wasn’t going to eat, so he calmed down and went to sleep in his bed with a little patting. Then he slept the rest of the night so I knew he didn’t need to eat! Then the next night he woke up with a dirty diaper and I was able to change him and get him back to sleep without him screaming, then he slept good the third night and just woke up a little early. So I think I’ve got him re-trained! It’s just so hard with nursing to know how much he’s getting and if he’s getting enough! I’m just glad I can pump and he’ll take bottles so I’ll know for sure. I think he’s trying to wean himself because he’ll only nurse for 2-3 minutes on each side at a time. I’m kind of sad in a way since he’s not quite 9 months, but glad too because he’s never been a great nurser and he’s started to bite! I’m just trying to nurse him once a day and pump the other 3 times for now, and maybe try to hold out for another month or so.

If that wasn’t enough, we’ve had yet another visit to the doctor this week. I’m starting to think we should have our own room there or something! Luke starting running a fever last Thursday, just as Caroline was getting well from hers, so I figured he had the same thing. His fever wasn’t as high and only lasted for a day, so I figured he was okay. But then he started coughing a lot over the weekend and by Monday he sounded pretty bad. So I took him in and they said it wasn’t RSV, just a bad cold. Nothing you can do but let it run its course! Uggh! I’m glad it wasn’t anything serious, but you never know! He still sounds really bad today and the doctor said if he’s not better by the end of the week to call, so I’m sure I’ll be going AGAIN! And they’ll probably say he’s fine, but I just keep thinking about Caroline having bronchitis and not sounding that bad. I did get to talk to the doctor about his allergies a little more, especially his rash around his diaper area. I thought he might be allergic to the diapers since the rash was only where the diaper touched his skin. I tried sensitive (hypoallergenic) diapers, but it didn’t seem to help. The doctor wrote a prescription for some cream to try, so hopefully that will help. Then they’ll do a blood test at his 9-month check-up to confirm his milk allergy so we’ll know if we should do soy formula or not after I wean him.

On a happier note, Happy Valentine’s Day! Caroline helped me make some heart-shaped cookies that were oh-so-yummy!
