April started off rough! Since I wasn’t able to do it before Spring Break, I had to reschedule my 6-month check-up full- body thryoid scan for the first week in April. I had to get 2 thyrogen shots 24 hours apart at my oncologist’s office to help my TSH levels go up temporarily without me having to get off my thyroid medicine. Then I had to check into the hospital to take the very low-dose iodine pill the next day, then had the scan at the hospital 2 days later, then went back to my doctor for follow-up blood work. So basically I had an appointment nearly every day that week! I’m so glad the kids were healthy and could go to school while I was doing all that! It wasn’t all that bad but just a lot to do! And thankfully, my scan showed no thyroid cancer growing back, just some residual thyroid cells that we might have to deal with if they’re still there in another 6 months.
Here’s where I got to take a nice little nap for 30 minutes while I had my scan:
After all that, I came home to relax but instead found our downstairs bathroom to be a little backed up. I called Chris to see if he could get a plumber out since it was Friday and I knew we didn’t want to have them come over the weekend. He told me to just not use the bathrooms until he could get someone out there. So I picked up the kids from school and we were all very careful not to use the toilets, etc. Well, I just wasn’t thinking and started a load of laundry – BIG mistake! Sewage started POURING out of the downstairs toilet and splashing all over the floor and headed into the hallway! I was screaming and grabbing all the towels I could to dam it up and keep it from reaching the carpet and the hardwoods! The kids were upset too, of course! Luke just kept saying, “It’s a big mess, Mommy!” And it WAS! I called Chris and told him it was now an emergency and we needed to get someone out TODAY!
Well, we had to go through the warranty company and they couldn’t come out until the next day! And Chris was in a meeting at work, but he was able to come home early when that was all done and help me clean up the mess!Fortunately, the kids took good naps that day and we were able to get it all cleaned up. We were trying to decide if we needed to go to a hotel for the night since we were afraid to use any of the bathrooms, but we ended up just waiting until the plumbers came the next day. Chris contacted the previous owner of our home and was able to find out about where the sewer clean out was, but we couldn’t find it at first! Fortunately, the plumbers were finally able to find it and open it up so they could see what was going on. They ran their snake tools through the line and couldn’t find any blockage, but when we ran all the faucets and drained all the tubs and flushed all the toilets, the flow was still a little slow. Then when we tried to start the washer again, it really started backing up. The plumbers said they would have to come back on Monday and run the hydro jets to try to clear it out some more, but they didn’t end up coming back until Tuesday! So we just tried to take quick showers and minimize water use (which meant no laundry!) until they could come back. At least the clean out was open so that if it backed up again, it would go in the yard instead of the house!
Well, the plumbers came back on Tuesday and ran the hydro jets to clean it out more and it was still blocked. At that point, they did all they could do under the warranty so we called someone else that could come out that next day and scope out the problem. So the new plumbers scoped the line and found the blockage out in the back yard near the main line, which was actually in our back-door neighbor’s yard. They came back the next day with all their heavy equipment and had to replace that part of the line since it was rusted and full of tree roots, etc. Then it was fixed!! I was never so excited to do laundry after a week of not being able to do it!
And if all that wasn’t bad enough, we noticed our AC wasn’t cooling like it should and it was starting to get warmer outside. So we had some repair men come out to fix that as well!
Then we received the most serious bad news that Chris’ dad had prostate cancer and that he would be having surgery to remove that in the next few weeks!! It was so hard hearing that news after all we had going on, but we were so thankful to have a God we can trust in who takes care of us and provides so wonderfully for all our needs! Otherwise, it would have been too much to handle!
