Results, but no Answers

The nurse called from the pediatrician’s office the other day and said Luke’s milk allergy results came back negative, meaning he’s not allergic to milk. I was SO surprised and in disbelief I asked the nurse what else could be causing him to break out when he eats yogurt or gets a hold of Caroline’s milk? She said she didn’t know and to maybe try a different kind of yogurt. Well I had JUST tried some a few days before so I told her that and she said she’d talk to the doctor and see if she wanted to run more extensive tests or something. They called back the next day and said pretty much the same thing, so finally the doctor said she would refer us to an allergist. I think that’ll be the best thing so they can do other tests like on his skin or have him eat yogurt at their office or something.

After all that, I was a little confused and discouraged because I knew something had to be making him break out with yogurt and milk. I did a lot of research online to see if there was anything with similar symptoms that didn’t show up on a milk allergy blood test. There was one thing that had similar symptoms to milk allergy called milk protein intolerance (MPI) or milk soy protein intolerance (MSPI) but with that the baby often has colicky symptoms and blood in their stools, neither of which Luke has. So, I got bold and decided to try other sources of dairy like cheese. I bought some of the baby food mac-n-cheese dinner that has dried cheddar cheese in it and what do you know? He didn’t have a reaction to it! Then I was really confused! I got brave and borrowed some milk-based formula and tried giving him some of that – he didn’t break out right away like with the yogurt, but he did have a few little whelps around his mouth. I probably won’t be giving him any more of that until we see the allergist and get some more answers, so I’ll just use the soy formula for now since I’m officially out of stored breast milk!

No rashies here! Doesn’t he look like a little man?!

In other news, it was a GORGEOUS day here so we took the kids on a long walk & wagon ride:
