Memorial Day weekend

We had a really low-key “holiday” weekend, but it was nice. Luke started running a fever Wednesday night and it was still high in the morning, so I decided to take him to the doctor on Thursday before the long weekend. By the time we got to the doctor, the Motrin I had given him earlier had kicked in and he seemed okay and his temp was normal. However, we had to wait a LONG time to see the doctor and by the time we were done, he was burning up again! The doctor said his ears looked fine but his throat looked bad, so they tested him for strep. That was negative so they pricked his finger for a blood test and his levels indicated a virus. Poor baby just laid on my chest and whined off and on while I was talking to the doctor – SO unlike him! We discussed milk alternatives now that he’s almost one and should be getting off formula and can’t have cow’s milk. The doctor said he could drink soy milk (like the kind I was drinking while nursing) but it didn’t have enough fat like whole milk, so he would still need one formula feeding a day. Anyone else had this problem or have any other suggestions? Like coconut milk or rice milk?

Caroline was going a little crazy after waiting so long at the doctor’s office, but fortunately Chris came to help out! Luke passed out in the car, but woke up when we got home. I fed him lunch by the hardest and he ate a little and cried for his bed. He ended up sleeping for over 4 hours! I woke him up to give him some milk and he wanted to get back in bed, poor guy! He was just listless and pitiful, but after dinner he perked up a little and played some. He even went to bed on time after that long nap! He slept good that night, but the next day his nose started running and he was coughing. It got worse over the weekend and he was having trouble eating and sleeping because he couldn’t breathe! I just keep suctioning his nose and it’s SO sad! I just want him to be well for his birthday on Friday, but I know the doctor won’t give him any medicine unless it’s been over a week. I did ask for some more Zantac, which he was taking for reflux but I had weaned him off of it because he wasn’t spitting up any more. It seems like it helps prevent so much mucous production because every time I’ve tried to wean him off of it, he gets a bad cough/congestion! Hopefully that will help or at least make it until we go back to the doctor next week for Luke’s 12-month check-up!

On Saturday, Caroline had her second swimming lesson and did pretty well. Chris took her since Luke was sick and I needed to stay home with him. She still has trouble putting her face/head in the water, but she is starting to get used to being in the water without holding on tightly to an adult. Afterwards, we all trekked over to the toy store to look for some things for Luke’s birthday, then went to the library to return some movies. We came home for lunch and naps, then took the kids swimming at our neighborhood pool after dinner, since Luke seemed a little better.

Sunday after church, Luke was just pitiful again and just coughing and all snotty. He took a good nap (Caroline didn’t nap at all!) and woke up a little cranky. Then Monday, Chris did some yard work that morning, then Caroline and I went swimming with some friends while he stayed home with Luke. For lunch we grilled hamburgers and had baked beans, then I made some BBQ chicken, scalloped potatoes, banana pudding, and cookies for dinner that night. Chris grilled up some corn and we had a good meal to celebrate those men and women who gave up so much so that we could be free!! Thank you!!
